D.C. Mayor Signs Driver´s Licenses Bill.
The new law, which was signed by the D.C mayor will take effect in May next year. “It’s an earnest effort to give people identification and legitimacy in terms of driving a car,” said Vincent Gray, the democratic Mayor of D.C.
By this amendment illegal immigrants will obtain same driver´s licenses as citizens. There are more states in the U.S where this law is effective, for example in Maryland.
The bill would create a two-tiered system of licenses in order to comply with federal law. The licenses for immigrants who can’t prove their legal status would be marked as invalid for federal purposes.
The IDs will not be valid for use as identification to board commercial aircraft. They also cannot be used to enter federal buildings or nuclear facilities — the limitations set out by the 2005 REAL ID Act.
